How to become a UI UX designer in India, step by step

There is no entry exam and no required degree. People come into UI UX design from engineering, commerce, arts, and non-design jobs. What they share is a portfolio that shows how they think. These six stages are the route we walk students through at Aarasoft Academy in Tirupur.

Written by Manoj Kumar, who spent 4.5 years designing ERP systems, mobile apps, and business platforms before teaching.

01

Understand what the job really is

UI is how a screen looks and behaves: layout, type, colour, buttons. UX is whether the product makes sense to the person using it: can they find what they need and finish the task. Most roles in India ask for both. Read a few real job posts and note the words that repeat.

Ready when: You can explain the difference between UI and UX to a friend in two sentences.

02

Learn the process before the tool

Design is a sequence of decisions. Talk to users, find the real problem, organise the content, sketch rough wireframes, test them, then make them look good. Learn user interviews, personas, user flows, information architecture, and simple usability testing.

Ready when: You can take one everyday problem from interview notes to a tested wireframe.

03

Get properly good at Figma

Figma is free to start and is what most product teams use. Go past drawing rectangles: learn auto layout, components and variants, styles, and clickable prototypes. A clean handoff to developers is part of the job.

Ready when: Your screens resize cleanly and another person can find any component in your file.

04

Practise on real problems, not copies

Copying a Dribbble shot teaches visuals, not thinking. Pick something people around you actually struggle with: booking a bus ticket, ordering from a local shop, filling a college form. Talk to five people who use it, find where they get stuck, and redesign that one part.

Ready when: You have at least two projects where you can name the user, the problem, and what you changed.

05

Turn projects into case studies

A portfolio is not a gallery. Each case study is a short story: the problem, who you spoke to, what you tried, and why you chose what you did. Two or three honest case studies beat ten pretty screens.

Ready when: Someone outside design can read your case study and tell you what problem you solved.

06

Apply, get feedback, keep going

Search for UI, UX, product, and UI/UX designer roles. Expect a portfolio review and often a small design task. For local openings, read UI UX designer jobs in Tirupur and UI UX designer jobs in Coimbatore.

Ready when: You are sending applications every week and updating your portfolio from what interviewers ask.

Live online UI/UX design class at Aarasoft Academy Tirupur explaining what UI and UX are

A live class at Aarasoft: stage one, what UI and UX actually mean.

Where are you starting from?

Just finished 12th

You have time on your side. Learn design alongside a degree rather than instead of one. We wrote a separate guide: UI UX course after 12th.

Graduate or fresher

Your degree subject matters less than your case studies. Spend your energy on stages four and five, and start applying while you are still polishing.

Switching careers

Developers, graphic designers, and non-IT professionals all bring something useful. Your past work makes a good case study topic.

Doing it with a mentor

You can learn all of this on your own. A course saves time with an order to follow and someone who reviews your work. The 8-week UX/UI Design Masterclass covers stages one to five, from UX foundations and research to Figma prototyping, usability testing, and a portfolio-ready case study, with 1:1 feedback. Classes run live online and offline at our Tirupur campus. Fees: enquire for details on +91 93422 42792.

Wondering what the work pays? We do not invent numbers. Read UI UX designer salary in India and salary in Coimbatore and Tirupur, where every figure is quoted from a named public source. No course can guarantee a job or a salary, ours included.

Common questions

Can I become a UI UX designer without a design degree?

Yes. Many design teams hire on the strength of a portfolio and how you explain your decisions, not on the name of your degree. Some companies still list a degree in their job posts, so read each listing, but the portfolio is what gets discussed in the interview.

Do I need to know coding to become a UI UX designer?

No. You need to understand what developers can build and how to hand off a design clearly. Knowing a little HTML and CSS helps you talk to developers, but it is not a requirement to start.

How long does it take to become a UI UX designer?

It depends on how many hours you put in each week and how quickly you finish real projects. A focused course like the 8-week UX/UI Design Masterclass gets you through the basics and one portfolio case study; most people keep practising and adding projects after that before they apply widely.

Which tool should I learn first?

Figma. It is free to start, runs in the browser, and is what most product teams use for screens, prototypes, and handoff. Learn the tool while you learn the process, not before it.

Will a course guarantee me a UI UX job?

No course can promise a job, and Aarasoft Academy does not. A good course gives you structure, feedback, and a case study you can defend. The job search itself is still your work.
