UI vs UX: the difference, explained with examples

UX is how a product works and feels when you use it. UI is what you see and tap on the screen. People say “UI UX” as one word because the two always meet, but they answer different questions.

UX decides what should happen. UI decides how it looks while it happens.

One screen, two kinds of questions

Take a bus seat booking screen. A UI designer and a UX designer look at the same screen and ask different things.

UI questions

  • Is the Pay button the most visible thing on the screen?
  • Can the seat numbers be read at a glance?
  • Do booked and free seats look clearly different?

UX questions

  • Should the date come before the seat picker or after?
  • What happens if the seat you tapped was just taken?
  • How many taps from opening the app to a confirmed ticket?

A screen can pass every UI question and still fail the UX ones. That is how you get apps that look good but leave people stuck.

Four apps you already use

  1. Food delivery app

UIThe food photos, the size of the Add button, and the colour that tells you the shop is open.

UXShowing the delivery time before checkout, keeping your last order one tap away, and letting you change the address without starting over.

  2. UPI payment

UIA large, clear amount, the name of the person you are paying, and a green tick that is easy to recognise.

UXAsking for the PIN only at the last step, and saying exactly what to do when a payment fails instead of a vague error.

  3. College admission form

UILabels above each field, readable text on a phone, and error messages placed right next to the field.

UXSplitting a long form into short steps, saving progress, and not asking for the same detail twice.

  4. Bus ticket booking

UIThe seat map, the icons for sleeper and seater, and the colours for booked and free seats.

UXRemembering your usual route, showing boarding points clearly, and sending the ticket where you will find it on the day.

The skills behind each side

UI skills are visual and precise. UX skills are about people and structure. The middle is where most real work happens, and it is why entry-level jobs usually ask for both.

Which should you learn first?

Learn them in the order the work happens. UX first, so you know what the screen needs to do, then UI, so it looks and reads right.

  1. 01Understand the user
  2. 02Map the flow
  3. 03Wireframe it
  4. 04Design the UI in Figma
  5. 05Test and improve

That is also the order of the 8-week UX/UI Design Masterclass at Aarasoft Academy: UX foundations and user research first, then information architecture, interaction design, Figma prototyping, accessibility, usability testing, and a portfolio-ready case study, with 1:1 feedback from Manoj Kumar.

UI vs UX: common questions

What is the difference between UI and UX in simple words?

UX (user experience) is how using a product feels and whether it works for people: the steps, the order, and how easy it is to finish a task. UI (user interface) is what you see and touch on the screen: buttons, colours, text, icons, and layout. UX decides what should happen; UI decides how it looks while it happens.

Can you have good UI and bad UX?

Yes, and it is common. An app can look beautiful but hide the one button you need, ask for the same details twice, or show an error that does not say what went wrong. The screens look polished, but the experience is still frustrating.

Should I learn UI or UX first?

Start with UX basics: understanding users, mapping flows, and wireframing. Then learn UI so you can turn those wireframes into clean screens in Figma. Most entry-level roles expect you to do both, which is why they are usually taught together as UI UX design.

Is UI UX design one job or two jobs?

Both exist. Large companies sometimes hire separate UX researchers and UI or visual designers. Smaller companies and startups usually hire one UI UX designer who handles research, flows, and screens. Learning both keeps more options open.

Do UI and UX designers use different tools?

They overlap a lot. Figma is used by both for wireframes, screens, and clickable prototypes. UX work also uses methods more than tools: user interviews, card sorting, user flows, and usability testing. UI work leans on type, colour, spacing, and design systems inside Figma.

Does Aarasoft teach both UI and UX?

Yes. The 8-week UX/UI Design Masterclass at Aarasoft Academy covers UX foundations, user research, information architecture, interaction design, Figma prototyping, accessibility, usability testing, and a portfolio-ready case study.
