Non-IT or career gap to UI UX: a career switch guide

You do not need a computer science degree or an unbroken CV to become a UI UX designer. You need to understand users, design clear screens in Figma, and show that thinking in a portfolio. This guide is for people coming from non-IT jobs or returning after a break, and it is honest about the hard parts too.

These are some of the people our UX/UI Design Masterclass is open to, alongside students and software developers. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing design.

What your past work already taught you

Sales, a billing counter, or customer support
You already listen to people and notice where they get stuck. That is where user research begins.
Teaching, training, or coaching
You can explain an idea step by step. Designers do this every time they present and defend their work.
Accounts, admin, or office operations
You put messy information in order. In design, that skill is called information architecture.
Garment, textile, or production work
You follow a process and check quality at each stage. Usability testing is the same habit, applied to screens.
Time away for family or health
You have planned around other people's needs and limits. Good UX is exactly that kind of thinking.

The honest hard parts

Figma feels slow at first. If you have not used design software before, the first couple of weeks are mostly about getting comfortable with the tool. That passes with daily practice.

Restarting after a gap takes routine. The hardest part is often fixing regular study hours again, not the design itself. Choose hours you can keep, every week.

Your portfolio is what gets judged. Certificates help a little; case studies that show how you think help a lot.

No course can promise a job. Ours does not. A mentor can shorten the route and point out mistakes early, but the practice is yours.

Explaining the gap or the switch in an interview

Keep it short, true, and pointed at your work. Fill in the blanks with your own story:

“I spent [time] as [your role]. During that time I kept noticing [a problem people had]. I learned UI UX design to solve problems like that, and my case study on [project] shows how I work.”

For a break, one honest line is enough: “I took time off for [reason], and I used the last few months to learn design.” Then move to the portfolio. That is where the interviewer will want to spend time anyway.

Two learners who started outside UI UX

I started with no knowledge of UI/UX, but now I can create designs with confidence.

I'm Pragti, a Fashion Design graduate and currently a Graphic Designer. I was always interested in UI/UX, but I couldn't find the right platform to learn it from scratch until I joined Aarasoft Academy.

A first month you can start this week

  1. Week 1

Read ten real UI UX job posts and note the words that repeat. Learn the difference between UI and UX.

  2. Week 2

Open a free Figma account and rebuild one simple screen from an app you use every day.

  3. Week 3

Pick one problem from your old work and talk to three to five people who face it.

  4. Week 4

Sketch a fix, test it on two people, and write down what changed. Then decide about a course.

The full route, from first lesson to first application, is in how to become a UI UX designer in India.

Questions people ask before switching

Can I learn UI UX design without an IT background?
Yes. UI UX design is about understanding people and designing screens that make sense to them, and you learn the tools from the start. The Aarasoft UX/UI Design Masterclass is open to non-IT professionals and starts from zero.
Is a career gap a problem when applying for UI UX jobs?
It can come up in interviews, so prepare a short, honest explanation. What design teams spend most of their time on is your portfolio and how you talk about your decisions. A recent, well-explained case study shows you are ready to work again.
Do I need to learn coding to become a UI UX designer?
No. UI UX designers do not need to write code. It helps to understand how developers build screens so your handoff is clear, and that is covered as part of learning Figma and design handoff.
How long does a switch into UI UX take?
The masterclass itself runs for 8 weeks. How long the job search takes after that depends on your portfolio, your practice, and the openings at the time, so nobody can honestly promise a date.
What is the course fee?
